Introduction

In November 2006 the first Training of Intercultural Trainers (TOIT) took place. The event was a huge success and inspired 25 participants to put to practice their newly acquired knowledge and skills to organise intercultural initiatives in Europe. Already during the preparations of the first TOIT, it became clear that there should be a second one. There were so many people who wanted to participate that many of them had to be disappointed. The need for a second TOIT became even clearer when a very enthusiastic group of participants completed the first TOIT. It had proved to be a magnificent week where the participants learned both from the trainers and from each other in theory and in practice. It could not have been better. Need we say more! TOIT II is coming!

Training of Intercultural Trainers (TOIT) in short

Group exercise during TOIT 1!

The Training of Intercultural Trainers aims to equip young educators (NGO workers and trainers passionate about intercultural theme and motivated to share their knowledge with others) with the knowledge and skills to design and implement intercultural projects in a more professional way. Through combining knowledge and skills from both the field of training as well as intercultural education, the participants will be provided with a profound and complex picture of strategies for working in culturally complex environment. Supported by a balanced program and excellent trainers active in European Youth Work and intercultural communication and management business, participants will be able to analyze intercultural (training) needs in their local environment, to design, implement and run the projects independently as well as evaluate the outcomes. Already during the training course participants will start working on their independent projects, which they will implement after the training course. The Training Of Intercultural Trainers will be a valuable and useful source for all who want to improve their intercultural training skills in order to implement intercultural projects within their local, regional, or international settings of the framework of European Youth Work.

Motivation

TOIT is especially designed for young educators who will be provided with a profound and complex picture of strategies for working in culturally complex environment. We believe that this training course can make a significant difference in the way young European educators develop and organise their intercultural initiatives within Europe.
The idea to launch a Training of Intercultural Trainers originated from signs coming from the NGO world that they were not keeping up with the recent developments in the intercultural field. The initiators of the first TOIT believed that by employing old, criticized methods and approaches, many of the intercultural initiatives in the NGO world cannot reach predetermined objectives. Superficial perception of intercultural phenomena is present in many initiatives. In our opinion there is therefore a significant need to introduce new approaches towards intercultural education into the work methodology of non-governmental youth organizations. The intercultural world has changed and we want to follow these changes. Culture metaphors or thoughtlessly applied dimensional divisions, which often create more barriers and separation rather than understanding and cooperation, should be left behind and we believe that the NGO sector needs to keep up with the already happening and the forthcoming changes in order to achieve the goals of intercultural dialogue, understanding and tolerance.

Aims

Session with Eleanore Breukel during TOIT 1!

The overall objective of the training course, Training of Intercultural Trainers (TOIT), is to provide young educators with the knowledge and tools to develop, implement and evaluate an intercultural training course within their own local, regional or international environment. We aim to improve the quality of international/ intercultural youth work and to assure advancement of skills and competences of young educators. Through workshops, simulations, lectures and an exchange of best practices 25 young people will work together on challenges of running intercultural learning events in a multicultural environment. During the event the participants will work not only on the development of intercultural-management skills, improvement of intercultural knowledge and practical skills in fields of didactics, training design, presentation techniques, giving feedback, motivation techniques and working methods in a multi-cultural environment, but they will also have a chance to develop their own independent projects and create working teams that could implement a new wave of intercultural activities.
With these independent projects we aim to establish an indirect impact on the participant?s surroundings. Indirectly all the people whom could benefit from the future activities run by TOIT?s participants, can also be seen as our target group. From the first TOIT we know that the participants are interested in launching intercultural training courses on both local and international level. We aim for the same effect with TOIT II. That is why we want to provide them with opportunities to develop strategies for initiatives undertaken on both local and international scale. In a broader perspective, due to a snowball effect, we are certain that a broad world community will benefit from the spin-off effect of TOIT.
The follow-up after the TOIT is one of its strongest points. One of the goals of the training is to make participants put the acquired knowledge and experience into practice in the year(s) following the training. Our initiative aims at shaping and educating trainers, who will then become multipliers and ?ambassadors? of the up-to-date intercultural strategies and approaches. After accomplishment of the training, those above-mentioned ambassadors will go to different parts of our continent and run training courses, projects and other initiatives for other, less privileged people, who will in this way indirectly benefit from the training course.

Method

In general the working methods of the Training of Intercultural Trainers are inspired on the methodology of the non-formal education as well as methods of intercultural learning. The concept of the Training of Intercultural Trainers is the unique combination of training techniques, intercultural theories, and practise. The methods used in the training will be interactive and comprehensive to indicate all possible styles young trainers could use in their future initiatives.
A broad variety of training methods will be used to make TOIT a good learning platform for its participants. Besides traditional methods such as presentations, lectures, debates and workshops, we put a great emphasis on self-learning as well as on active participation of each trainee in the programme. TOIT will focus on issues such as presentation techniques (getting the message across), group dynamics & behaviour and intercultural learning to allow the trainers to be successful taking into consideration the background of the audience they are facing. Thanks to the cooperation with SIETAR Europa as well as trainers engaged in work of other SIETAR bodies we can reach the best experts in the intercultural filed. A very important aspect of the methodological approach of this training will be the focus on culturally sensitive issues, which require increasingly more attention in developing any kind of intercultural training. We hope that the participants of the TOIT will learn how to touch upon even the most sensitive issues such as religious background, beliefs, attitudes and culturally-shaped behaviours of their trainees.
