    Pachinko, by MinJin Lee

Published February 2017 by Head of Zeus.

    Cover art by Tom Hallman

This is a call for the YS bookclub, to read the book and share our thoughts by our founder and current Treasurer, Veronique Killian:

Pachinko is the title of the book that I received from Young Sietar member Clair Aghassipour for my birthday. It was an excellent read on holiday and I am very impressed with the writing skills of the autor Min Jin Lee. She writes about identity, selfworth and personal development in a intercultural context, including stereotyping and discrimination. Min Jin Lee published the book in 2017. It is an epic historical fiction novel following a Korean family who immigrates to Japan.

With the backdrop of the Japanese occupation of Korea, Pachinko follows the lives of a family living in Korea that re-establishes itself in Japan. The narrative progresses through the years and the events of WWII. Even as the story near modern day, its characters are never quite free of their history and the events of the past. As a reader I was invited to love the characters, invited into their thoughts, behavior as if one was looking deeply inside.

Pachinko was a 2017 finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.

In this book one gets a taste of the historic background and intercultural context of the time, and how the book originated to shed light on these intercultural groups.

Meanwhile, the story has been adapted into a miniseries produced by Apple TV and a documentary about Min Jin Lee was made using both English and Korean languages.

Who wants to be caught by this book and share together what it brought up?

This presents unique challenges to tackle in 2024 - 25.

This is a callout to you, dear members (and prospective members):

    • Do you have experience working in global teams and can offer insight/ training?
    • What would you like to learn more about?
    • What skills (under the intercultural umbrella) would you like to hone?
    • What skills would you like to share (or practice) with the group?
    • Are you working on a research project that you would like to talk about?

We will be sending out a general questionnaire / poll soon, but if you are excited to share your thoughts now - contact us - with the heading "2024 - 2025 ideas"!!!

We are currently recruiting to fill the following volunteer positions:

    • President
    • Secretary
    • Education Coordinator
    • Research Coordinator

So, what would you do in these positions?

    President:
Are you the new face of Young SIETAR?

Every organisation needs a leader – Young SIETAR is no different. We are looking for someone to take on the challenge of representing Young SIETAR to the world beyond as well as guiding our organisation into 2024 and beyond.

Are you the enthusiastic Young SIETARian we are looking for? A heart for Young SIETAR is more important than a track list of experience. Young SIETAR provides a platform to learn for us all – also for its President.

    • Chairing the meetings of the Young SIETAR Board (about every 6 weeks) and of the General Assembly (once a year),

    Secretary:

    Do you treasure Young SIETAR?

Secretaries are SO important for keeping an organisation afloat. Are you one of those more structured people who like to keep track of things and are not too adverse to numbers? This position might not be seen as the most exciting position, yet it is (and good for your CV) to be working in a virtual team with fellow Young SIETARians from around the globe. From record-keeping, compliance, keeping meeting notes advising others and more! It also offers the opportunity to participate in other projects that are run within YS –  take your pick!

    Time commitment 10 - 20 hours a month

    • Leading and moderating the Training team, which includes organizing meetings, documenting, archiving, etc.

    • Coordinating, implementing and maintaining of training team projects such as the TOIT 3 and

    • Webinar projects

    • Updating and maintaining information related to Training on the YoungSIETAR website

    • Initiating, supporting and developing new projects and other activities related to Training (such as

    • Working together with the other Content Board members (Research and Education) in coordinating overlapping projects.

    • Participating in the running of the organisation by providing feedback on and contributing to general board issues (e.g. strategy, improvements of the organisation, etc.)

    • Initiating, supporting and developing new projects and other activities related to Training (such as YS Cafes and Virtual YS Cafes, Training Library Materials etc.).

    • Participating in the running of the organisation by providing feedback on and contributing to general board issues (e.g. strategy, improvements of the organisation, etc.)

Note: New activities and initiatives can always be taken up

Time commitment: 8-16 per month (but could be more in periods just before YS Training events)

    Research Coordinator:

Are you the next Research Coordinator?

All you need is an interest in intercultural research; our vision for Research has been about supporting the beginning researcher and bringing research and practice closer together, not necessarily about doing research itself. You can help develop the R in Young SIETAR and contribute to this aspect of the YS community.

    • Leads the Research team

    • Initiates and/or supports new events/workshops/ideas for projects related to research & education

    • Searches for news in the field / Monitor educational and research activities

    • The YS Research Coordinator will drive the momentum of research-related projects to help create and define a space for members to share and contribute to the intercultural knowledge framework using virtual tools.

    • The YS Coordinator is essentially responsible for providing intercultural research content and opportunities for members of Young SIETAR.

      • This may involve creating and hosting YS Webinars and YS Virtual Cafes focusing on intercultural research.

      • There is also the possibility to contribute to the developing YS mentor program to connect established interculturalists to those who are new to the field.

Time commitment: 2 + hours per month (varies per project interest)

If any of these positions sound interesting to you, send your CV and a letter of interest to board@youngsietar.org today!!
